Deer Salt Block vs. Natural Mineral Rock

Deer naturally seek out salt blocks and mineral rocks for the supplements they need. Learn about different types of mineral blocks and which kind is best.

LEARN MORE ABOUT REDMOND HUNT

Some of us have a sweet tooth and some crave salty stufflike a perfectly cured piece of venison jerky. Whitetails have a natural craving for salt. They also need it, and an abundance of other minerals, for optimum health. Which is why it makes sense we use mineral licks to attract deer to our lands.

Today, as a good hunter and steward, you want to attract and provide a quality supplement that nurtures and helps your herd grow. So what kind of salt block for deer does that best? Licks come in three basic forms: white salt blocks, pressed mineral blocks, and natural mineralized salt rocks. Let's talk about each, their benefits, and which is best for deer herd management and health.

Early spring is a great time to place a salt lick at your mineral site. Whitetails crave salt more in spring and summer—when water and potassium are high in lush green vegetation—than at any other time of year. Salt can also be an effective carrier to provide dozens of other important minerals that improve health, growth, and trophy potential. That's why salt shouldn't be the only factor you look for or assume deer want when choosing a food blockA complete spectrum of balanced macro- and microminerals that nourish your herd is essential. So what is the best deer mineral block that will help you get the most bang for your buck?

Pressed White Salt Blocks

Simple white salt blocks contain the sodium chloride deer crave—but that’s it. No other beneficial nutrientsStraight salt can be somewhat effective as an attractant in spring and summer, but during the fall deer’s hankering for it drops, and so will visits at these sites.

Also, pure salt, without other balanced minerals, may create kidney and vascular problems if deer consume too much. Straight salt may temporarily attract deer, but does little to nourish or improve herd health—and may actually decrease it.

White salt deer block

Advantages:

  • May attract deer during spring and summer.

Disadvantages:

  • Manufactured, processed, and heat pressed.
  • No additional nutrients to improve health.
  • Too much salt intake can create health problems.
  • Won't attract year-round.
  • Dissolves more quickly in rain and humidity.

Pressed Deer Mineral Blocks

A manufactured mineral block contains salt and some added nutrients. These often include calcium and phosphorous—which support bone and antler development—copper, zinc, cobalt, magnesium, manganese, and some targeted vitamins like A, D, and E.

Choosing a mineral block over straight salt is a step up, but most manufactured blocks still don’t deliver the full spectrum of balanced minerals necessary for optimum growth and health.  And most blocks also contain things you don’t want deer to eat—like synthetic flavors, scents, and sweeteners as attractants. In fact, this Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife article notes while sugar may increase licking (so deer do have a sweet tooth), it also causes tooth decay that diminishes food consumption and health.

Deer mineral block

Advantages:

  • Contains more nutrients—typically around 7-10 added minerals and several vitamins.
  • Flavor and scent agents attract year-round.

Disadvantages:

  • Manufactured, processed, and heat pressed.
  • Many include synthetic flavors or scents.
  • Many include sugars which cause tooth decay and diminish health.
  • Doesn’t include a complete spectrum of minerals.
  • Dissolves more quickly in rain and humidity.

Natural Mineralized Salt Rocks

Mineralized salt rocks, like Redmond Hunt Trophy Rock, are really just that—solid rocks created by nature. They’re mined straight from the ground and sold in their natural dense state—which means they hold up much better in the field than pressed blocks. They also have a potent scent to attract deer, particularly when wet.

Mineral rocks have natural electrolytes and dozens of balanced trace minerals whitetails need—and not just the salt they crave. The plethora of macro- and micronutrients aid immune health, reproduction, fetal growth, milk production, and digestion, to name a few. Deer love and lick these rocks year-round and seek the nutrients they provide during every life phase.
